Digital healthcare reimagined

We used design thinking to help NHS Digital design a way to create relevant, powerful services that respond directly to their user’s needs.

The challenge
NHS Digital develops and operates data services to support clinicians and help patients get the best care.

The tools and services they develop include everything from the NHS website to screening and patient records. It’s a hugely complex system with over 370 products for different groups of users.

The NHS digital web team wanted to reassess their service.

They asked Nile to explore routes for collaboration across disciplines that would give stakeholders better access to data.

The future really has to be about co-production, co-design… As this develops, I can see this adding infinite value.
Denis Gizzi, Managing Director, NHS Oldham Clinical Commissioning Group
How we helped

The project was an eight-week design sprint. We mapped the team’s ambition against advancements and developments across the world.

This was a collaborative journey that championed the path to advocacy. We engaged people in a process that opened their eyes to the possibilities of using data.

We had input from key stakeholders, Clinical Commissioning Group users, and NHS Digital teams.

We defined what good should look like.

The NHS is under massive pressure to save money, to do things more efficiently. This process has given us really good, soundly thought through, logical ideas, that are going to make a difference.

A lasting impact

The prototypes and client testimonials we delivered became a rallying point for the NHS Digital web team.

We also built a lot of cross-organisational rapport.

And secured a rapid funding decision.

Using service design to create and deliver products across the nation, NHS Digital is actively saving time and money.
